The numbers

GradesHours per year (100.10(f)(2))
1 through 6900
7 through 12990

The regulation also says: "The substantial equivalent of 180 days of instruction shall be provided each school year" (100.10(f)(1)), and "Absences shall be permitted on the same basis as provided in the policy of the school district for its own students" (100.10(f)(3)).

When you can teach

NYSED's Q&A: "Instruction at home is usually given within the general timeframe of the normal school day, but greater flexibility in scheduling is possible. For example, parents may choose to provide instruction on weekends or in the evening. The total amount of instructional time per week should be generally comparable to that of the public school."

Attendance records

The regulation: "Records of attendance shall be maintained by the parent and shall be made available to the school district upon request" (100.10(f)(4)). NYSED adds: "It is recommended that parents keep evidence of their programs and their children's achievement and correspondence with the school district."

Hours on the quarterly report

Each quarterly report must contain "the number of hours of instruction during said quarter" (100.10(g)(1)). NYSED: "It is recommended that, in the secondary grades, hours per subject be included in each quarterly report." Starting mid-year? NYSED says "The number of reports should be proportional to the period of home instruction." See what a quarterly report must contain and starting mid-year.
